Cannot Start Outlook: Cannot initialize office shared utilities

Outlooks’ generally been good to you; till you think of all the times when you cannot start Outlook. These are times of testing – your patience that is. I’m beginning to think it’s like a rite of passage, when you cross the threshold, looking your Outlook errors square in the face and tackling  your ‘cannot start Outlook’ problem head-on. While most problems occur while you’re using Outlook, it’s the more critical issues that cause errors when you cannot start Outlook

‘Cannot start Outlook. Cannot initialize Microsoft Office shared utilities. Please restart your computer or reinstall Microsoft Outlook 2000.’ Wow, I really wonder what Outlook can do. Outlook problems and errors really give you nightmares, especially when you’ve unknown error messages that look like Greek to you. You haven’t the faintest clue about where to get started. Before you thrown up your hands in desperation, here’s what you’d like to know about your ‘cannot start Outlook’ error.

Start with what we already know – cannot start Outlook (duh!) and Shared Utilities isn’t getting initialized for some reason. What you should also know is general troubleshooting steps won’t be of much help here. Users have also posted quite a lot on this ‘cannot start Outlook’ problem as common resolution guidelines didn’t resolve their issue. So what really causes this problem?

Sometimes, an Outlook setting might be getting between the door. If you’ve chosen Run all from Network’ or ‘Run all from My Computer during Outlook’s setup, it might be possible that it’s preventing some shared programs from being installed in your computer.

If you’ve installed the Outlook 98 email security update, and try to remove the update because your now running Outlook 2000, then you cannot start outlook 2000 and receive the error message’ Cannot start Outlook. Cannot initialize Microsoft Office shared utilities. Please restart your computer or reinstall Microsoft Outlook 2000.’

Here’s what you can try instead. Pop in your Office installation disc, wait for a few seconds, and you’ll see an option to run Office Diagnostics. If the error message refers to corrupted files, note down the error code and get in touch with a Microsoft support technician, who would be able to correctly diagnose and fix your ‘cannot start Outlook; problem.
