Outlook Repair to Fix Issues With Detect and Repair Feature

How to use the Outlook repair tool to rectify issues

Outlook is an email client program that lets you send, receive or store mails. And that’s not all, it includes several other features too. For example, the Calendar feature in Outlook lets you schedule events, has options for setting up alarms, etc. In short, it lets you organize your day.

The Address book is another excellent feature in Outlook. This lets you store all your contact info which eliminates your need to establish a separate file for the same. These are just a few functions. For a complete list of Outlook functions, visit the Microsoft website.

Some more info

Outlook comes bundled with the MS Office package. Although it can be purchased individually, MS Office version is highly recommended. This is because Outlook has many functions which are to be used in conjunction with other Office tools.

That was a bit off the topic, let’s get back and look at the Outlook repair tools available.

In case of errors, Microsoft support recommends that you run these repair tools to resolve the issue. Just run the diagnosis and Outlook does the rest. It detects errors and later, fixes them. Yes, it’s that simple!

That does the trick for minor errors but for major errors?

Fix Outlook Issues

Here again, the Windows operating system contains a repair tool for resolving such issues. This is not just me saying, I do have Microsoft support to back my claim!

Go through the following troubleshooting steps to know how this works.

Outlook repair steps

1.       Using the inbuilt repair tool

  • Launch Outlook by double clicking on its icon at the desktop.
  • Click Help and then select Office Diagnostics from the drop down menu. Click Continue when prompted.
  • Press the Run Diagnostics button in the subsequent menu to start diagnosing errors. If a problem is identified, the tool fixes the issue immediately.

Most Outlook errors are resolved by this tool. If the problem persists, then move on to the Windows’ repair tool.

2.       Using Windows’ repair tool

  • Click Start and then open the Control Panel.
  • Open Add or Remove Programs by double clicking on the icon (for XP users). Vista users can do the same with the Programs and Features option.
  • Choose the MS Office version and then click Repair (for XP) or Change (Vista).
  • The OS asks for confirmation to start the repair process. Click Next.

The process is initiated.

Outlook repair? Try Detect and Repair

No, I didn’t get the title wrong, Outlook contains such a function. If you can’t locate such a function in your Outlook, maybe it’s because you are using Outlook 2007, in which case you will find the ‘Diagnostic’ tool. The name pretty much says what this tool is. But let’s not take any chances, after all, people can be dumb when it comes to computers.

Detect and Repair or simply Diagnostic

If you’ve skipped the previous paragraph, you’re probably confused right now. You’ll be wondering if there’s any difference between the two. So let me (again) make something clear, function wise, they are both the same. The only difference is that the former is how the tool is named in Outlook 2003 while the latter is how it appears in Outlook 2007.

Now that we’ve established the differences (phew!), let’s examine the tool. Both these tools are used for Outlook repair. Oh, another thing, the Diagnostic tool is more advanced. Well, it has to be, after all, it came in with Outlook 2007.

In the next section, you’ll learn how to use these tools. Read on!

Outlook repair instructions

1.       Using Detect and Repair in Outlook 2003

Launch Outlook 2003 by double clicking on its icon at the desktop. If you don’t have one on your desktop, well, you can open it from the Start menu.

Detect and Repair Feature

Select the Help menu by clicking on it. Alternatively, press Alt+H simultaneously to do the same. Once it’s opened, choose Detect and Repair.

Mark the box next to Restore my shortcuts while repairing, if it isn’t already selected. This will save your Outlook shortcuts. If you fail to do this, well, then there’s no returning.  I mean, you won’t have your shortcuts when you return!

Select Discard my customized settings and restore default settings to reset Outlook.

Click Start to initiate the process. Once it completes, click OK.

2.       Using Diagnostic in Outlook 2007

Launch Outlook by double clicking on its icon.

Open the Help menu and choose Office Diagnostics. Click Continue when prompted.

Click Start Diagnostics to initiate the Outlook repair process.

Yeah, that should take care of your Outlook problems for the time being. If not, you have two options: one is to go over other such articles, which takes time but is light on your pockets. The second is to get help for hire. Choose wisely!
